What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dance Class.

2 min read

Your child is ready to try dance. You’ve picked a class, added it to the calendar, and now you’re wondering what actually happens when you get there.

Every studio does things a little differently. Here’s a simple guide to that first visit, along with what you can expect at Center Stage Dance.

Before you leave home

Check with the studio about what your child should wear and bring. Dress codes vary, and there’s usually no reason to buy everything before a trial.

For a Discovery Class at Center Stage, comfortable clothes your dancer can move in are enough. They can go barefoot if they don’t have dance shoes yet. Bring a water bottle, put their hair up if you can, and you’re ready to go.

When you arrive

Give yourselves a few minutes to find the studio, use the restroom, and settle in. Let the staff know you’re there for a first class. This is also a good time to mention anything that would help the teacher welcome your child, whether they’re especially excited or feeling a little unsure.

At Center Stage, we help families choose a class that fits their dancer’s age and interests before the visit. Your child joins a real class, so they get to experience the room, the teacher, and the other dancers as they actually are.

During class

A first class might include a warm-up, new movements, music, and time practicing with the group. Your child may recognize some things right away and need help with others. That’s expected.

They don’t need to know the steps before they walk in. The teacher will guide the class, and your dancer can focus on trying it out.

Once class begins, give your dancer and their teacher a little space. It’s tempting to stay at the window and wave whenever your child looks over. But they often settle in more easily when they can turn their attention back to the teacher and the other dancers. You don’t need to catch their eye every few seconds to let them know you’re there.

Trust the instructors and staff to help them through the class. If your dancer needs you, we’ll come get you. And if you have a concern, please tell us, we’re happy to help.

After class

Ask your child what they liked. Was there a favorite song or movement? How did they feel with the teacher and the other dancers?

You can ask us questions, too. After a Center Stage Discovery Class, we’ll help you talk through whether that class felt right or whether another option might fit better. There’s no pressure to decide on the spot.

The first visit is a chance to see your child in the space and learn what they enjoy. That’s more than enough for day one.

Ready to give it a try? Request a free Discovery Class at Center Stage Dance, and we’ll help you find a place to start.
